These instructions are commands to be executed by an entity (not a ghost), the entity in the case of webpages is
your browser and some software like frontpage that acts like a browser. Your browser understands HTML as language,
like you understand english, so if this site was in german or chinese, you couldn't understand and do the things
that this site is all about. In the same way your browser couldn't figure out what to do if I wrote this page in
C++ or Pascal. In HTML these commands are called 'tags'. All tags are inside < >. Almost all sentences begins with an opening tag and needs its closing tag. like:
As you can see every opening tag "<tag>" needs its closing tag "</tag>". There are some exceptions in HTML but not in XHTML like I said earlier which is more strict than HTML. In the frontpage interface you can switch between HTML view and friendly interface view. As you set up your first pages you should look in HTML view to compare the code with what you are doing in the friendly interface. That is a good way to learn the code.
What is the friendly interface in frontpage? A few websites offer complete tutorials on how to code using HTML. Once you get the pages done, there is still a lot you can do to make your web pages more dynamic. Which means that you can change the plain book like display of a website to a more dynamic, interactive and enjoyable place to be. Inside a HTML document you can add scripts that will transform the whole look of a page to something way more attractive to viewers. Then again, a lot of website specialize in writing, getting from other users and storing them for you to use on your pages with a comment that states the author. But that can`t be seen in the browser. If You want to write your pages using .asp or .php, you will need to get really good at writing in HTML because you will be stuck writing your pages on a plain text editor. So a in between step will be to learn XHTML and then .asp or .php. The bottom line is that if you give them a try you will find over time that no language is impossible to learn. As I remember, the only language I had it hard at the beginning was C++, but after a few programs and a few night with a warm mug of coffee it all came clear. By the way you won't need C++ to build a website besides if you are creating a software that you want to sell over the internet. |
