Submit your Web site over the Web to build link popularity.

Promoting your website is what you need to do if you would like to get traffic to your website. The first step in the promotion of your website is to submit your website to all the search engines(SE) you can find. There are thousands and thousands out there. Some might say that because +80% of visitors are from the major ones like Google, Yahoo, MSN, etc., it is not worth to submit to the others, Wrong! 100 visitors might come from a major SE and not buy anything and just 1 customer from a lesser one and buy 3 of your products. But you wouldn't have made these sells if that customer couldn't find your Web site on his SE.

There are no better or worst SE since a paying customer could be from any SE it might be a good idea to consider all of them.
But there are more popular ones, like google who is one of the most popular if not the most popular SE on the web.

FFA - free for all submit

FFAs where pretty good a few years ago to bring visitors in. FFAs are easy to submit but the problem today with them is that there are to many of them(millions and millions) and the number of Web sites in them are way too many. Which means in a few words that nobody ever reads them and nobody will ever find your Web site. Unlike directories they never really rank high and there are no search features.

So why bother? They are still good to build up your link popularity which is one of the major factor for most SE. But, like Google, it is not enough. You need sites that links to you with content related AND Web sites that links to you with a Page Rank(PR) of +4 to count. So you need to team up with your competitors but in a way that won't affect your business.

Directories

Directories are like yellow pages of Web sites. They are well structured, a lot of them have good PR, a visitor can search with keywords like in SE and most of them are free. The biggest one and the one you should really try to get listed in is DMOZ which is actually one of the premium database of most SE. Most, if not all, SE will give higher ranking in search results if your site appears in DMOZ

So directories can be a nice source of one way quality links which is considered to be better by SE than regular links. One way links rank higher in SE because every links a Web site receives from other Web sites is counted as a vote for that Web site. So if you get a one way link to your site, you'll get the full point. But if you link back to that site you'll get, let say 75% of a vote. So it's still good but a full vote is better.

Forums and message boards

Boards and forums are another great free tool. Some can have high PR but most don't. But, the point of using those is to build up your link popularity by getting as many link in as possible. One thing to keep in mind while doing this on boards and forums, is to participate truthfully in the subjects and post your Web site address only in your signature. Don't burst into a thread with nothing to say or just spamming or flooding your Web site address around. This is SPAM, this is not welcome anywhere, this is not only annoying and immoral, it's illigal and can get your ISP account closed and your Web site put down and banned. So don't post pointless and useless stuff.

Ebooks and articles

Another great way to promote your site and bring visitors in is by writing Ebooks and articles. The great thing about Ebook is that it never dies. It spreads itself around like crazy, people enjoys them and the better the Ebook the better people will be willing to spread it around. Submitting articles to article directory works a little like Ebook. The difference is that with articles you still spread your Web site address over the web, which you don't with Ebook since your Web site address is inside the Ebook, because you will include your informations in the footer of the article. Some SE dig in .pdf docs, I would need confirmation if most do. Also, with articles, it's not as sure to stay around for years as Ebooks because Web sites do close and it is not all article directories that keep articles archived for long. But the best part is that it is free!
